🤔 A Short History of Rattles in Catfishing

Our grandpas used to think catfish were just bottom-feeding scum-suckers, rooting around for stinky stuff in the mud.  That's why they started adding a peg float to their rig--to hold their bait up off the bottom making it easier for catfish to find. And that made partial sense.

But there's some major problems with using bass lures for your line floats:

❌ Bass lures are made to float on top of the water, not handle the high pressure of deeper water.  This is why so many so-called "catfish rattles" leak.

❌ Bass lures are made to float a couple small hooks, not chunks of bait! Try as they might, they simply don't have enough buoyancy for the bait us catfish anglers use.

❌ Bass lures are made to tie to your line on the front, and only face the pressure of a few pounds of fish. (Let's face it, even a state record bass isn't pulling as hard as a mid-sized catfish). Even many existing "catfish rattles" are made from weak plastic that easily pulls apart. Sad.

❌ So what happens when you try to use a bass lure posing as a "catfish rattle"? There's never been a good way to attach them! If you loop your line through the metal guides, you create pinch points that either break your line, or torque the lure and crack it.  Or if you tie to the front and back, you've added extra weak points and also risk pulling the guides out of the thin plastic.
